Preparing for Your College Interview: A Consultant's Guide

The college interview is a critical step in the admissions process, providing an opportunity for you to showcase your personality, passion, and potential beyond your written application.

While every interview is unique, certain questions are frequently asked. Prepare thoughtful responses to: "Why do you want to attend this school?" "What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?" "Tell me about a challenge you've overcome."

Research Thoroughly: Know the school inside and out before your interview. Be able to speak specifically about programs, professors, research centers, and campus culture that interest you.

Practice Out Loud: It's not enough to think through your answers—you need to practice saying them. Mock interviews with a trusted mentor or consultant can dramatically improve your performance.

Dress Professionally and Arrive Early: First impressions matter. Dress in business casual attire and arrive 10-15 minutes early to collect yourself.

Ask Thoughtful Questions: The questions you ask reveal as much about you as your answers do. Prepare 3-5 genuine questions about the school, not things easily found on the website.

Follow Up: Send a thank-you note or email within 24 hours of your interview. This small gesture demonstrates professionalism and genuine interest.
